SPOONER, D. M. (Dept. Botany, The Ohio State Univ., Columbus, OH 43210). The northern range of eastern mistletoe, Phoradendron serotinum (Viscaceae) and its status in Ohio. Bull. Torrey Bot. Club 110: 489-493. 1983.The northern limits of Phoradendron serotinum (Raf.) M. C. Johnston have often been believed to have been determined by cold temperatures. A map of the northern range of the species, from Long Island to Missouri, was constructed from herbarium specimens and published data. The northern limit is correlated with the mean minimum January temperature of -4.5°C. Areas where the gross climatological data do not fit the distribution of the species are in areas where mistletoe grows in locally warmer areas that are not reflected in these data. Field work in Ohio, part of the northern range of the species, has demonstrated that the majority of the present-day distribution is along the Ohio River from Washington County downstream, in areas that are kept relatively mild by the moderating effect of the river. The most northern inland Ohio populations, previously documented, are now believed extirpated. A disjunct Cuyahoga County record mentioned by Trelease (1916) is possibly in error. The Ohio populations have undergone reduction in recent years due to over-collecting, cutting of host trees, and the severe winters of 1977-1978.

Sinker Structure of Phoradendron californicum (Viscaceae) Confounds its Presumed Close Relationship to Other Acataphyllous Species

Phoradendron is the largest genus of New World mistletoes, with about 250 species in two subgenera, Boreales and Aequatoriales, corresponding, respectively, to northern acataphyllous and southern cataphyllous groups. The typically acataphyllous P. californicum of western North America is controversial because recent phylogenetic work has nested it in the southern cataphyllous clade. Seedling es...

Two Epiparasitic Species of Phoradendron (Viscaceae) from Honduras: one New and for the Other a Range Extension and Host Determination

A new species of Phoradendron, Ph. mathiasenii, is described, and a range extension and host are given for Ph. tikalense. Both species are from Honduras and grow as epiparasites, i.e., mistletoes parasitizing other mistletoes. The parasitic host for both epiparasitic species of Phoradendron is Psittacanthus angustifolius (Loranthaceae), which in turn is parasitic on the terrestrial host, Pinus ...

Phylogenetic Relationships in Phoradendreae (Viscaceae) Inferred from Three Regions of the Nuclear Ribosomal Cistron. II. The North American Species of Phoradendron

A parsimony analysis based on sequences from the ITS region and two partitions of the 26S subunit of nuclear ribosomal DNA was used to infer phylogenetic relationships among the North American species of Phoradendron. A strongly supported clade united all but one of the species typically lacking ca taphylls, a character used previously to distinguish the northern species from those of Central a...

Isophasic Parasitism in Phoradendron Perredactum (viscaceae)

It is pointed out that the newly described Phoradendron perredactum Rzedowski & Calderón exhibits an advanced type of growth behavior (isophasic parasitism) that also occurs in three other, unrelated groups of parasitic flowering plants.
